CD replication vs. CD duplication explained
The two terms get used interchangeably, but they describe different manufacturing processes.
CD replication is the standard process for orders of 500 or more. We create a glass master from your audio, build a metal stamper, and physically press your music into virgin polycarbonate. Replicated discs have a silver mirror finish, the highest audio fidelity, and the longest archival life. This is the same process major labels use.
CD duplication is the process we use for shorter runs of 100 to 499 discs. We burn your audio to high-grade blank CD-Rs at high speed, then run them through the same printing and packaging line as replicated orders. Duplicated discs play in any consumer CD player and are visually indistinguishable from replicated discs once printed and packaged.
For most independent artists, duplication is the better choice on the first run. It hits a lower minimum, ships faster, and lets you test the market before committing to a larger replication order. If you need CD replication for quantities of 100–499 discs, give us a call at 1-800-468-9353 and we can help.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between CD replication and CD duplication?
CD replication uses a glass master and metal stamper to physically press your music into virgin polycarbonate, with a silver mirror finish. It is the standard process for orders of 500 or more. CD duplication burns your audio to blank CD-Rs at high speed and is used for shorter runs of 100–499 discs. Both formats play in any consumer CD player and look identical once printed and packaged.
What is the minimum order size for custom CDs and vinyl?
100 units for both CDs and vinyl records. The 100-unit minimum lets independent artists test the market with a manageable first run while still using the same professional manufacturing process as larger labels.
How long does CD and vinyl manufacturing take?
Short-run CD duplication ships in as little as 1 day from approved proof. Larger CD replication orders typically take 2–3 weeks. Vinyl pressing runs about 5–7 weeks. Turn times start the moment you approve your art files and master, not from proof approval, so you do not lose days waiting in queue.
What CD packaging options do you offer?
We offer jewel cases, digipaks, wallets, jackets, multi-disc packaging, and custom board packaging. All formats are printed in our facility with full-color offset or silkscreen printing and a UV gloss or matte finish. Each format is available at 100-unit minimums.
Do you press vinyl records too?
Yes. We press custom vinyl records in 12 inch LPs, double LPs, and 7 inch formats, with options for black, color, splatter, and marble pressings. Vinyl orders start at $999 for 100 LPs in printed Euro jackets. Mastering and lacquer cutting are done in-house on our own cutting lathe.
Are Disc Makers products made in the U.S.A.?
Yes. Every CD, vinyl record, DVD, and Blu-ray we manufacture is made at our Pennsauken, New Jersey facility. Customer support is U.S.-based and available by phone or email five days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.
What audio file formats should I submit for CD replication?
We accept DDP images, WAV files, and AIFF files. DDP is preferred for CD replication because it preserves track gaps, ISRC codes, and CD-Text data exactly as authored. For artwork, we accept high-resolution PDF, TIFF, or PSD files at 300 DPI.
Do you offer audio mastering and album design?
Yes. Audio mastering through our SoundLAB studio starts at $49 per track. Custom album design starts at $299. Both services can be added to any CD, vinyl, DVD, or Blu-ray order during checkout.
What formats do you make?
Disc Makers serves as the nation's premier one-stop manufacturing hub, offering an extensive selection of physical media formats tailored for modern independent creators. Our comprehensive products catalog features professional CD manufacturing, custom vinyl records pressing, premium DVD replication, high-definition Blu-ray discs, and custom branded USB drives. We manage our operations completely in-house to guarantee the absolute highest manufacturing quality and unbeatable turn times for independent musicians, indie filmmakers, and small businesses. Our versatile product ecosystem ensures you can transform your digital artwork into a lasting, premium physical product that drives real revenue.
What is duplication vs replication?
Short-run duplication is optimized for small batches of 100 to 499 units, where we burn your data directly onto premium-grade recordable media (CD-Rs or DVD-Rs) for rapid turnaround times. Long-run replication is designed for higher-volume orders of 500 or more units, where we create a physical glass master and injection-mold clear polycarbonate substrates to create pressed retail discs. Duplication is highly cost-effective for sudden merch table restocks, early demos, or fast promotional runs. Replication becomes the ideal, economical choice for permanent commercial retail releases where maximum durability and exact physical reproduction are required.
What CD cases are available?
Independent musicians can customize their CD releases using a massive variety of professional board and plastic packaging configurations to match their specific aesthetic. Our best-selling styles include sleek eco-friendly digipaks, lightweight printed jackets that are incredibly easy to pack for tours, and slim-silhouette CD board wallets. We also manufacture classic, sturdy plastic jewel cases for independent artists looking to channel a timeless, nostalgic major-label retro charm. Every single board style features premium full-color printing and a complimentary, super-shiny gloss UV coating to protect your album artwork against scuffing.
Is my order guaranteed?
Absolutely. Every single piece of media we ship out from our United States manufacturing floor is fully backed by our official 100% satisfaction guarantee. Disc Makers has proudly served independent musicians, filmmakers, and small businesses since 1946, and we stand behind our craftsmanship without compromise. If you are not completely thrilled with the printing fidelity, structural assembly, or playback quality of your finished media, our dedicated customer service team will work with you until you are. This long-standing commitment to manufacturing excellence ensures your creative investment remains perfectly safe and protected.
Why sell physical merchandise?
Relying exclusively on digital streaming platforms makes it incredibly difficult for independent musicians to monetize their art, as one single CD sale generates more immediate profit than roughly 3,000 streams. Fans love supporting their favorite creators by purchasing tangible, high-quality mementos like custom vinyl records and glossy digipaks at live concerts. Physical media allows independent artists to maintain an 85% profit margin, buying a custom CD for around $2 and selling it at a gig for $15. Combining physical products with streaming platforms is the absolute best way to maximize your music business revenue.
Do you sell empty cases?
Yes, our digital storefront features a fully stocked selection of professional CD, DVD, and Blu-ray packaging and mailing supplies for creators managing their own distribution. Independent labels and small businesses can browse our inventory of empty plastic jewel cases, clear multi-disc cases, black DVD cases, and unprinted die-cut board jackets. We also offer specialized adhesive foam hubs, clear plastic sleeves, and heavy-duty cardboard mailers to protect your fragile media shipments during transit. Our commercial-grade supply catalog ensures you can package and ship your media assets with a polished, consumer-ready presentation.
Can I make movie discs?
Independent filmmakers can easily manufacture high-quality, professional video releases using our rapid short-run DVD and Blu-ray duplication services. We print your custom artwork directly onto premium archival-quality discs using advanced, high-resolution printing processes that display fine details beautifully. Filmmakers can select classic wrap-around plastic cases, custom board digipaks, or compact sleeves to give their movie a polished, theatrical presentation for film festivals and indie retail sales. Disc Makers offers production speeds as fast as one single day, making us the ultimate partner for tight cinematic deadlines.
What is the combo pack?
Our specialized Vinyl + CD Combo bundle package allows independent musicians to diversify their physical merchandise offerings for one incredibly low, consolidated price. This value-packed arrangement includes 100 black 12" vinyl records inside full-color Euro jackets alongside 100 full-color CDs packed in matching printed jackets. Investing in multiple physical formats ensures your music reaches every single type of fan, from traditional audiophile vinyl collectors to commuters who listen to CDs. It provides independent bands with incredible profit flexibility at their merch tables, offering multiple price points to capture every sale.
Where is this factory located?
Disc Makers is extremely proud to execute 100% of its disc manufacturing, custom board printing, and final packaging assembly right here in the U.S.A. We manage a state-of-the-art facility that allows our production supervisors to monitor every stage of your project under strict quality control standards. This localized, all-in-one manufacturing setup completely eliminates the long international shipping delays, customs errors, and poor print quality often associated with cheap overseas brokers. Independent creators receive a premium, retail-ready product that looks and sounds completely flawless.
How do digital proofs work?
We expedite your project timeline by utilizing our proprietary online proofing and 3D upload tools directly within our streamlined digital ordering interface. The moment independent artists upload their high-resolution artwork files, our system generates an instant graphics proof so you can verify layout accuracy. This automated validation process saves creators two to five days compared to traditional manufacturing companies that require manual engineering sign-offs. Your project transitions into active physical production instantly, ensuring your custom media is pressed, packaged, poly-wrapped, and shipped out to your doorstep with unbeatable speed.
