Frequently asked questions
How much can a 12-inch vinyl hold?
For optimal sound quality, we consider 18-20 minutes per side ideal for a 12-inch vinyl record. We recommend that your record should contain no more than 22 minutes per side. The longer an album is, the more sonic compromises need to be made during mastering, most commonly leading to lower volume and less bass. If your album is 44 minutes or longer, consider releasing a double LP (another service provided by Disc Makers).
What is the most common vinyl record size?
The most-popular size for vinyl records is 12 inches, which is the standard size for a full-length album. We also offer 7-inch vinyl records if that's what you prefer! Opting for the substantial 12-inch architecture gives musicians maximum surface area to display gorgeous graphic artwork on heavy cardboard jackets. This classic physical format has historically dominated retail shelves worldwide, from legendary independent local shops to massive commercial retail spaces like the historic Tower Records chain. Choosing this standard size ensures that your musical project fits perfectly onto any traditional household turntable platter without requiring special adapters.
What speed do 12-inch records play at?
The most-common speed for 12-inch vinyl records is 33 1/3 rotations per minute (RPM). This is the standard speed for LPs, and it allows a record to hold roughly 18-22 minutes of music per side. It is possible to cut a 12-inch record at 45 RPM, which makes them a “maxi single” which holds up to 15 minutes per side. However, this is uncommon in this day and age, except for limited copies for club DJs.
Do you offer test pressings for 12-inch vinyl records?
Yes, test pressings are available for purchase on any new record project! However, not every Disc Makers vinyl package automatically includes test pressings.
Since test pressings require a separate press setup, they tend to be expensive and lead to longer turn times. Disc Makers vinyl orders of 100 to 300 units typically do not include a test pressing. For orders of 500 or more records, we strongly recommend that you order you order test pressings as an extra quality control step. For orders with test pressings, we ship 5 test pressings to you to review. This ensures your music sounds flawless.
What additional services does Disc Makers offer for 12-inch vinyl records?
In addition to providing custom vinyl record pressing, Disc Makers offers post production mastering to optimize your sound, award-winning record jacket design, and record jacket printing (including wholesale printing services for pressing plants and record labels). We also create vinyl jackets for manufacturers. Our vinyl record jackets are available in super-shiny gloss UV, velvety matte UV, or semi-gloss aqueous finish.
What are the main physical differences between an LP and a maxi inch single?
An official 12-inch single or dynamic maxi release is expressly engineered to deliver maximum acoustic volume and pristine club playback. Because these specialized inch releases contain fewer individual musical tracks per side, the cutting engineer can radically widen the internal groove spacing across the wax surface area. This physical expansion allows for much deeper microscopic modulations, translating directly into booming bass frequencies and pristine high-end clarity. This high-output configuration became the foundational sonic backbone for underground disco subcultures, allowing selectors to play heavy basslines at extreme theater volumes without inducing distortion.
How did historic labels like Columbia Records influence modern 12-inch LP manufacturing?
The development of the modern 12-inch LP structure was pioneered by historic entertainment industry giants like Columbia Records during the mid-twentieth century. Their technical transition from fragile shellac materials to flexible, microgroove vinyl formulations completely revolutionized how consumers collected and enjoyed commercial music. This material innovation expanded the total capacity of a single disc, enabling the recording industry to move away from multi-disc albums of short 78 RPM singles. Today, our manufacturing plant utilizes these same time-tested geometric standards, combining historical physics with modern automated machinery to press flawless, long-playing records.
Can independent artists press specialized promotional 12-inch discs for club DJs?
Absolutely, producing a dedicated promotional 12-inch package is an incredibly effective marketing strategy for independent producers looking to generate club buzz. Our automated pressing plant routinely manufactures short runs of high-fidelity inch discs specifically configured for mobile turntablists, college radio broadcasters, and regional tastemakers. Spreading a single vocal track and an instrumental remix across a wide twelve-inch surface area allows for incredible groove dynamics. This configuration provides performing artists with the heavy, pounding sonic presence required to command attention on massive subwoofers inside crowded nightlife venues.
Do your vinyl pressing services accommodate niche musical genres like roots reggae?
Our high-fidelity custom vinyl record plant regularly processes diverse recordings spanning every imaginable acoustic style, including sub-bass heavy genres like roots reggae and electronic dub. These specific rhythmic styles feature dense low-frequency arrangements that demand expert engineering during the lacquer cutting phase. If your master files contain extreme bass energy, our team will optimize your layout parameters to ensure the playback needle remains firmly seated within the track. We configure your master to maximize fidelity, ensuring that your customized wax selections deliver the authentic, warm, chest-rattling sound experience your fanbase expects.
How does the total minutes of audio alter the layout of your vinyl grooves?
The exact amount of minutes of audio compiled for your master tape dictates the physical configuration of your vinyl record layout. When an artist squeezes excessive material onto one side, the cutting stylus must compress the geometric parameters, running more individual lines across the face. This structural compression limits the physical depth of the path, resulting in lower playback volume and a noticeable reduction in bass definition. By keeping your tracking lists within our recommended temporal thresholds, you ensure your project retains the maximum dynamic range, punching through home stereo systems beautifully.
